WEEK 2 : DAY 3 FOIS SYSTEM

2.3 FREIGHT OPERATIONS INFORMATION

SYSTEM (FOIS)

"Mal gadi chuk chuk chuk" Here we comes to our national wide freight trains commonly known as the " Mal Gadi ". We will talk about how it is managed. In our day to day life we often ignore it but the truth is that cargo trains are the major transporter of commodities like petrol etc in India. So, let's bow down our heads and say  "Mal gadi chuk chuk chuk"

FOIS is a system for instant management and control of freight movement, so that asset utilization is optimized. It enables freight customers to have instant access to information regarding the current status of their consignments in transit. It aims to bring the transparency in freight operations so that customers will get up to date information.

2.3.1 Composition of FOIS system

       FOIS system comprises of :-

  • Rake Management System (RMS): for handling the operating portion.
  • Terminal Management System(TMS): for handling the commercial transactions.
  •  E-payment of Freight.
  • RR Generation.
  • MIS reports, Data ware house finally WEB access to customers.

2.3.2 FOIS ARCHITECTURE

FOIS Architecture

Intelligent terminals are placed at control offices, yards, goods sheds, C & W depot, Loco sheds etc., to capture the data from the place of activity and connected to the Application Server through reliable communication links for transaction processing.

Application servers are centrally placed at CRIS office. These servers are connected to the Zonal Headquaters, Divisional Control Offices, yards, interchange points, and good sheds etc., with a reliable and integrated network. The servers are networked amongst themselves and to the central server for global level transactions.

2.3.3 FOIS network topology

FOIS Network Topology

Zonal headquarters are given at least two uplinks to CRIS data servers. At each zonal level mesh networks are created interconnecting divisional headquarters. Network access to data capturing points are provided from divisional headquarters. For redundancy of path neighbouring data capturing points are interlinked. V-sat is provided to establish connectivity to locations where other means of communication like railways communication links/ BSNL channels are not available. It is essentially a ring topology.
